Working with PDF documents

Edition makes it easy to incorporate PDF files into the workflow. You can upload PDFs and within minutes the system will convert them into digital editions, which you can build upon or simply publish as they are. The process is very simple and is demonstrated in a quick how-to video, but here are a few tips on creating your PDFs that you should know before you advance to that.

There is a myriad of applications out there that enable you to create content and export it as PDF files. Some of these applications will generate a PDF which is tailored for a specific purpose such as printing, but because the process of producing physical content requires a slightly different approach, those files don’t translate well to the web.

So, here’s a short check-list of properties that we've tested to ensure they yield the best possible results. These properties are:

  • Individual -single- pages, not spreads
  • Unified page size*
  • Image resolution of at least 300 dpi
  • Embedded fonts
  • use RGB colours only
  • Include URL links or link annotations for automatic recognition

*PDFs can contain the MediaBox, TrimBox, and/or CropBox, but make sure they are consistent through all the pages/PDFs.

With these properties your PDF will be ready for the next step.
